Conventional and Functional Medicine

Functional Medicine for the 21st Century

Functional medicine is an evolution of the practice of medicine that better responds to the healthcare needs of the 21st century. Focused on addressing the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms, functional medicine incorporates the latest information and understanding about how environmental and lifestyle factors in concert with genetics and individual biology influence health and wellness.

Re-establish Balance

Integrating best medical practices, functional medicine integrates traditional western medical practices with what is sometimes considered integrative medicine. That integration creates a focus on prevention as well as treatment through nutrition, exercise, and re-establishing metabolic and hormonal balance.

Use of the latest laboratory testing and other diagnostic techniques as well as prescribed combinations of medications, nutritional supplements and botanical medicines allow the patient to feel better, live with more vitality and even prevent disease.

Dr. Karen Kaufman has a passion for providing personalized and comprehensive care to her patients using a combination of conventional medicine and her functional medicine training.

How is Functional Medicine Going To Help Me With Hormone Imbalance?

Hormonal balance actually involves much more than just the measurable hormones. It is a web of interactions between nutrition, digestive function, detoxification function and hormonal function. The role of your doctor is is to help define any dysfunction by taking a thorough history, physical exam and lab tests. Then, in partnership with you, treatment is recommended and can include dietary changes, nutritional supplementation, herbal medicine, exercise and stress reduction techniques.

Personalized Patient-Centered

Integrative and functional medicine is a personalized, patient-centered approach to treatment that looks at underlying causes of your symptoms. Evidence shows that the greatest health transformation and experience of well-being happens when all factors, including stress, nutrition, exercise, sleep, genetics and hormone imbalances, are evaluated and treated. Services I provide will evaluate and treat hormone balance at every age. This includes bio-identical hormone therapy as well as evaluating nutrient deficiencies, cortisol stress dysfunction, thyroid and our gastro-intestinal function and how it all feeds each other.

Functional and hormonal medicine services may or may not be covered by your insurance plan but certainly can go toward your deductible. Our office will provide you with a superbill to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement but we do not bill your insurance directly. Because Dr. Kaufman is a board certified M.D., most patients can expect significant reimbursement.
